NWHM will host a viewing of the HBO movie Bessie, starring Queen Latifah. Bessie (2015) follows the story of legendary blues performer, Bessie Smith, who rose to fame during the 1920s and '30s. The film focuses on Smith’s transformation from a struggling young singer into “The Empress of the Blues,” who became one of the most successful recording artists of the 1920s and is an enduring icon today.
